Maungaraki Rollers

Rollin’ on the hill

About Rollers

Roller sports like Inline Hockey are fun, active and exciting for kids and adults alike. But there are limited options in Lower Hutt, and especially on the Western Hills. That’s why we kicking off the Maungaraki Rollers, to provide unstructured roller play and practice on the western hills on Sunday afternoons.

The club was established in 2021 by Maungaraki resident Paul Matthews and his daughter Annah, who plays Inline Hockey for the Capital Penguins. They wanted to help other kids have fun on skates, discover roller sports, plus have somewhere closer to practice… so the Maungaraki Rollers was born!

This is an informal, unincorporated club. This means we come together, book the hall together and rollerblade/skate together, but there are no coaches and participants are responsible for themselves.

If you enjoy skating, play Inline Hockey, or just want to have fun on wheels, come along and roll!

Join us on Sundays

The Maungaraki Rollers sessions are held on Sundays 4pm-5pm in the Maungaraki Community Hall, 135 Dowse Drive.

The sessions are for those who either just want to have some fun on skates, or play a roller sport (such as Inline Hockey) and want some extra practice.

This is unstructured play and practice, meaning there are no coaches or instructors – it’s a chance to just do your own thing.

We strongly recommend the use of helmets and knee/elbow pads for protection.

Bring your own skates, or use some of our spares if you just want to give it a go.

The Sessions

Bring or borrow

You can either bring your own skates, helmet, pads and other items you need, or we have some you can borrow to give it a go.

For safety reasons, only skates (inline or roller) can be used – no skateboards, bikes, scooters etc.

All skates will be assessed for suitability for use in the venue. However skates in reasonably good repair should be fine.

Hockey sticks will need to be taped to ensure they don’t damage the surface of the hall. We have tape.

Sign up, Turn up

Subscribe to the mailing list below – we’ll keep you in the loop about sessions and any other activities each week.

Then just turn up on Sundays at 4pm!

Feel free to come a few minutes early to get geared up (and watch the end of the hockey practice!)

There is no cost to attend these sessions, thanks to private contributions and the support of the Maungaraki Community Association.

Have fun

These sessions are being provided for fun, and because it’s hard to find places to get on your skates in the western hills.

The most important rule: have fun!

We want everyone to have fun, so please also be respectful of others. This is a safe place for everyone and no bad behaviour will be tolerated.

Safety is paramount, and anyone causing a problem with other skaters or doing anything that might hurt themselves, others or the venue will be asked to leave.

Inline Hockey in Maungaraki

Roller Hockey Players

Inline Hockey is a super fun sport, similar to Ice Hockey but not full contact (meaning you can’t take out other players). It’s a skill-based sport, so size is less important than commitment and focus.

We have a heap of young Inline Hockey players in Maungaraki – some play for the Capital Penguins Inline Hockey club and some just like to practice with the team.

We usually run a DevSquid for kids wanting to give it a go, from either Term 2 or Term 3. This is best suited for those ages 7-13, however other ages are welcome!

As a result of previous Dev Squads, we have a bunch travelling from Maungaraki each week by van and carpool to the club practice in Kilbirnie. Transport can usually be arranged.

There are 2 training sessions a week for hockey players:

  • Tuesday afternoons, 5:30-6:30pm, Kilbirnie*
  • Sundays 3-4pm, Maungaraki (informal)

* NOTE that we take a van-load of kids to Kilbirnie for the Tuesday sessions and others carpool. If your kid is interested, we can usually get them over to Kilbirnie on Tuesdays.

The Kilbirnie session are fully coached as part of the Penguins teams.

All gear initially provided by the club (including hockey skates, caged helmet, pads and stick).

There is both an annual and a per-term cost to the Capital Penguins to cover rink hire, training, loaner gear etc. Those who are playing in tournaments also join the national body IHNZ.
